Reflection on 1Jo 5:11-13
These verses are preceded by these words of God: “If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son. He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son.” (v. 9-10) And the following verses read: “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us when we make our requests, we also know that He will give us what we ask for.” (v. 14-15)
Word of life: And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
Who has given us eternal life? God.
Where is this eternal life? In His Son.
What is eternal life? It is not a life on this earth which lasts 70-80 years on average and is connected with illness, troubles, betrayals and pursuit of vanity which will pass away. Eternal life means not only that it lasts forever, but it is a life without suffering, pain, a life in unspeakable joy without end. And it is a life in God, about which the Word of God says: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
We are on earth, and yet we can have eternal life already here – not in its fullness, but as in the seed there is a future tree, so here too we have the seed of God’s life.
Who has the life of God, and who has it not? The answer is: He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. We need to be aware of the apostle’s call who writes to them who believe in the name of the Son of God, that they may know that they have eternal life.
If someone asked: Do you have eternal life? If you say: “I don’t know” or “I’ll know after death”, it is a bad answer. You must know: If I have the Son, I have eternal life now! And I do not doubt it. Because the Word of God witnesses to it, and the witness of God is greater than the witness of men.
