Reflection on Rom 4:13

“For the promise that he would be the heir of the world

was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.”

What does the word heir express? The Word of God says that if we are children, we are also heirs. And how do we become children of God? By receiving Jesus: “As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” (Jn 1:12) Salvation, which Jesus obtained for us through His blood in a hard struggle on Calvary, is given us freely as an inheritance through faith. We should obtain grace for other people too, that they also may receive Jesus and share in the inheritance of eternal life after death.

What does it mean to be the heir of the world? It does not mean to establish dominion over the world for our physical descendants, as it has been misinterpreted by some Jews to this day. It means to win souls for God! At the time of Abraham, human souls were under the sway of demonic forces within worldwide pagan worship of a variety of idols. We are in a similar situation today. We likewise need to win the world for Christ, that means to deliver the souls from the power of the spirit of lies and death, i.e. the devil, by the prayer of faith. By faith we are to allow God’s almighty power and love to save souls. The Scripture says, “And this is the victory that has overcome the world – our faith.”

That is why the prayer of faith is so important especially in these times of psychological and spiritual war against the forces of darkness. The Apostle Paul writes in the Epistle to the Ephesians, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Eph 6:12) We have to know that our victory is beyond human strength. Therefore we need the faith of Abraham. First, we need it for our personal salvation where the faith is focused on the cross of Christ and His redemptive death for us. And second, we need it to lift up the spiritual mountains of evil and demonic forces. Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, it will be done for him.” (Mk 11:23) We need not lift up physical mountains, but the spiritual mountains of demonic forces which occupy the whole territories. These cannot be removed by the most advanced technology but only by the power of faith through which we are united to Jesus crucified and risen. In practice, let us also stand in faith in the prophetic prayer (Ezek 37) for the resurrection of dry bones at least once a week, preferably during the holy hour. We thus win the world for Christ! We thus cooperate with Jesus in the salvation of immortal souls!
