Reflection on Rom 6:16

Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?”

This verse from the Scripture reveals a deep truth about obedience the fruit of which is eternal life in heaven or eternal death in hell.

Apart from the word obedience, this verse also emphasizes the word slave (Gr. dúlos). According to the Greek original, the verse should actually read as follows: Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey? You are either slaves of sin, which leads to death, or you obey God, which leads to justification from sin and to life.

If we do not serve God wholeheartedly, we are not free but we are slaves of original sin which is in us. We automatically obey original sin, i.e. the source of lies and evil in our heart. Original sin clouds our mind and weakens our will so that we hate the truth about ourselves, reject the true good and refuse to serve God and keep His commandments.

How did the spiritual infection of the first sin originate? By disobedience of the first people to God and obedience to the devil as they followed his lies to both their own and their offspring’s detriment.

Who is the devil and who are demons? They are fallen angels, spiritual beings (so-called negative energies). God only created good angels, but intellectual pride and unwillingness to submit to and obey their Creator led to rebellion against God. God’s angels whose hearts were opened to pride became demons refusing to obey God.

Here we can see again how important obedience to God is. The obedience of faith unites us to God while unbelief and disobedience separates us from Him. If we obey God, we are free from the slavery of original sin. If we do not obey God, we are slaves of sin, even if we are millionaires, ministers, prominent artists or writers, world-famous scientists, or even presidents. If anyone does not obey God, he is a slave of sin and is not free.

The first parents committed the first sin. They disobeyed God, and we inherited this inclination from them – disobedience to God and obedience to sin. The spiritual genetic programme of sin leads to both temporal and eternal death – separation from God forever in hell. Spiritual poison was injected into the soul through obedience to the fallen angel – the devil.

God had mercy and out of His love for us gave His only begotten Son. Dying on the cross, He redeemed us from sin. He obtained for us the forgiveness of sins as well as deliverance from the slavery of original sin – the source of evil. He has given us His grace and His Word which we are to keep in obedience. We thus become free in Christ even in this life. If we walk in obedience to His commandments by the power of His Spirit, we are free and no longer slaves of sin. So this freedom has one condition – to obey God, to live in dependence on Him by relying on Him in our private life, by turning to Him when we make decisions, by seeking His will, by asking Him for light and strength and by respecting His commandments.

Today we can see how many people are dependent not on God but on alcohol, drugs, sexual perversion, gambling, career, consumerism, money, stomach, destructive ideologies, ego, or decadent music which brainwashes them and turns them into zombies. Every such person is a slave of sin.

The basic question: Who do I obey and who do I serve? Sin? This leads to eternal death.

Do I obey and serve God? This leads to justification from sin and eternal life!

Life is short. You know neither the day nor the hour of your death. Be wise! To serve God means to reign!
