Learn by heart 1Jn 5:20:
“And we know that the Son of God has come, and He has given us understanding so that we can know the true God. And now we are in God because we are in His Son, Jesus Christ. He is the only true God, and He is eternal life.”
We know that the Son of God has come, and He has given us understanding so that we can know the true God. (What understanding has the Son of God given us?)
And now we are in God because we are in His Son, Jesus Christ. (In whom are we and why?)
He is the only true God, and He is eternal life. (Who is Jesus Christ?)
1) What is in store for us unless we believe that He is the One who Is – the true God?
Jn 8:24b: “Unless you believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.”
2) For what understanding does Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross open our eyes?
Jn 8:28a: “Jesus said to them: ‘When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM.’”
3) By which words did the Lord Jesus Himself express that He is the true God, of one Being with the Father?
Jn 8:58: “Jesus said to them: ‘Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM.’”
Jn 10:30: “The Father and I are one.”
Jn 10:37-38: “If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.”
Jn 14:9-10: “Jesus said to him: ‘Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say: ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me?’”
4) What was the reason why the Jews sought to kill Jesus?
Jn 5:18: “Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.”
Jn 10:33: “The Jews answered Him: ‘It is not for a good work that we stone you but for blasphemy; because you, being a man, make yourself God.’”
5) By which words did the Apostle Thomas express that the reality of Jesus’ resurrection confirmed His Divinity?
Jn 20:28: “And Thomas answered and said to Him: ‘My Lord and my God!’”
6) What testimony in the Holy Scripture does the Holy Spirit bear through the Apostle Paul about Jesus being God?
Phil 2:6: “Being in the form of God, He did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”
7) What testimony does the Holy Spirit bear through the Apostle John about Jesus being God from the beginning?
1Jn 1:1: “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled of, the Word of life.”
Rev 1:7-8: “Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen. ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,’ says the Lord, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’”
Rev 1:17b-18: “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.”
- Read the 8th chapter of St. John’s Gospel. The spiritual fight here is directed against the most fundamental truth, and that is that Jesus Christ is the true God.
- Meditate upon the testimony of the Holy Scripture saying that Jesus is God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God. (Jn 1:1-18)
- Write by heart 1Jn 5:20
