To you is born this day the Saviour, who is Christ the Lord!
At Christmas, we commemorate the coming of Christ into this world. He was born as a defenceless Child for our sake. Let us realize the great joy which the Word of God brings us: “To you is born this day the Saviour, who is Christ the Lord!” (Lk 2:11) This day and to me is born the Saviour! This day and to you is born the Saviour!
Christ wants to be born in us too, and through us He wants to bear witness to the world. Why? So that people may receive forgiveness of sins and be saved. It is written in the Gospel: “He will save His people from their sins.” Jesus is the Head of the Mystical Body – the Church. We are His members, and He wants us to bear witness in these times and to be ready even to suffer for this testimony. He saved us through His suffering, through His Blood, through His sacrifice on the cross.
God wants us to accept His programme, His way: the way of humility which is also connected with the birth in a stable, with poverty, humiliation, then with the bold preaching of the Gospel, breaking with the spirit of this world as well as from the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees, then with persecution, rejection and with the cross, but ultimately with resurrection and glory in heaven. So Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. And we want to follow Him. He is the programme for us to follow. We want to be a living sacrifice for Jesus, i.e. to lose our ego – our enjoyments, plans, various visions which are contrary to the will of God – every day. Let us allow Him to live in us and to transform us into His likeness. Let Him be born in us – in our thoughts, in our reason, in our feelings – let us make a place for Him there, so that we can say truly like the Apostle Paul: “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.”
