Consecration of homosexuals to bishops in the Catholic Church

                                                                                                                                     Congregation for Bishops

                                                                                                                                     Card. Giovanni Battista Re

                                                                                                                                     Prefect

Your Eminence,

in connection with the consecration of a homosexual bishop in the Church of England the Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate issued an official standpoint. We quote: “Consecration of a bishop – homosexual makes it impossible to have whatever contact with him and with those who appointed him. We can no longer cooperate with these people not only in the sphere of theological dialogue but in humanitarian and religious-social spheres either. We do not have a right to admit even a single suggestion of a consent to the position which they took, because we find it deeply antichristian and blasphemous.” (published on portal credo.ru on 17th November 2003)

Our Greek-Catholic Church is divided into the Churches sui juris. The largest among them is the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church (UGCC) which has its branches e.g. in USA, Canada, England, Italy… Other Churches sui juris are e.g. in Carpatho-Ukraine, in Poland, Slovakia… UGCC has about 40 bishops and about 10 million believers altogether.

We supposed that after the moral scandals in USA the leadership of the Church will repent in relation to this sphere; however, we can see quite the contrary, and that even in our small Eastern Church. In these days it has been published that the Apostolic See (Congregation for the Oriental Churches) chose a new bishop about whom it is publicly known that he is a homosexual.

This arrogance greatly outraged us and that is why we now publicly announce that this bishop is not the only one. Among the 40 bishops he is already the sixth homosexual! We now ask before God and before the whole Church: Who concretely has these crimes connected with the choice of bishops on his conscience? Should not the Orthodox Church for this reason also break whatever contact with Rome as it did with the Church of England?

We ask: Who in the past saw to it that these homosexuals were pushed through to the posts of bishops in our Church? The main culprits are:

1)      Congregation for the Oriental Churches

2)      Card. L. Husar

Already for several times we have with urgency brought to attention their anti-Church activity, and that is why we demand again:

1)      Abolishment of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches! The reason for its abolishment is not only this crime but also other crimes by which this Congregation systematically and covertly liquidated and still liquidates our Eastern Church.

2)      Withdrawal of Card. L. Husar to emeriture and his adequate punishment. In his place to appoint a true Catholic and moral personality that will lead our Church and nation in Ukraine to a true awakening – to a spiritual resurrection!

3)      Not to consecrate any candidates to the posts of bishops who were proposed by the Bishops’ Synod led by Card. L. Husar.

Concerning this concrete tragedy we propose a solution and that not only for our but also for the Roman-Catholic Church: According to the Church Tradition and doctrine the seminaries must not receive individuals with homosexual inclinations and if such people are priests already, whether diocesan or religious, they should immediately be laicized!

Concerning bishops homosexuals who for the time being, in contradistinction to their Anglican colleagues, do not avow this abomination in public, they should be punished even more severely than seminarists or priests. It is inadmissible that any homosexual should hold the office of bishop. There should likewise be punishments on those hierarchs who support homosexuals and advance them to Church posts, as it is done by Card. L. Husar and Card. M. Vlk. They both publicly introduce a new thinking of “unity” with abominations, for which God set the most severe punishments!
