Renewal of discipleship and of services in the Church

Jesus Himself chose His disciples and out of them He chose Twelve to whom He devoted Himself for three years. Even we are to be His disciples. Jesus said: “Go into all the world and make disciples” (Mt 28:19). These disciples then form a living spiritual organism the head of which is Christ. Disciples are related with this word: “You are the body of Christ, and members individually. And God has appointed these in the Church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers…” (1Cor 12:27-28). If Jesus gave us a commandment that we must make disciples, first we are to be disciples ourselves. Who is a disciple? A disciple is neither a graduate of theology with several degrees, nor a philosopher, nor a biblist, nor a moralist, it is neither a social worker, nor a Church hierarch, nor a prospering priest. The norm of discipleship was set by the Saviour Himself: “Whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be my disciple.” (Lk 14:33) The relationship between a disciple and his master is different than the relationship between a student and his teacher. Student may be enthusiastic over his professor yet his private life is not shared by him; whereas in a relation master – disciple the essential thing is: sharing a common life, it is a practical transmission of the spirit and of lifestyle. Example: During the life of St. Ignatius of Loyola his spiritual sons (disciples) very quickly opened themselves to the Spirit of God whom St. Ignatius had received from God for a renewal of the Church. Afterwards, by means of a concrete structure they transmitted this Spirit on and on until they renewed the whole Church...
